Meet the Breeder - The Knockglass Flock

Stranraer based John Barrowman has been dedicated to the breed ever since receiving a gift of four ewe lambs from his uncle, 40 years ago. John, wife Allison and sons John and Willie farm between two neighbouring units, North Knockglass (150 acres) and Mid Knockglass (420 acres). They have plenty to keep them busy, with the Northglass herd of Holstein Friesians, managed by John Jnr and wife Gillian, and a 120-cow suckler herd (mostly Limousin and Blonde crosses), put to the Belgian Blue bull, which is overlooked by Willie and his wife, also Gillian.

Along with the purebred Borders, a flock of 120 Greyface ewes is run at Mid Knockstead.

John and family are dedicated to bringing out the original qualities of the Border Leicester, known as "The Great Improver".

The family also somehow find time to show their sheep, picking up plenty of winning tickets at local shows and John has also judged at all four Royal Shows!
